{"id":124,"date":"2012-01-09T00:57:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-09T00:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pellwallhelp.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/09\/sandalwood\/"},"modified":"2012-01-09T00:57:00","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T00:57:00","slug":"sandalwood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pellwallhelp.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/09\/sandalwood\/","title":{"rendered":"Sandalwood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The sandalwood I use in many of my products comes from Vanuatu.<\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HZa0BAl1-iI\/T9Md1v5PPLI\/AAAAAAAAALs\/tRNW7MX_btc\/s1600\/sandalwood.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"136\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HZa0BAl1-iI\/T9Md1v5PPLI\/AAAAAAAAALs\/tRNW7MX_btc\/s320\/sandalwood.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Pieces of good quality sandalwood<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\n<a name='more'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another of the classic ingredients of perfumery that has been in use for centuries, sandalwood is a fragrance that will be familiar to most people. &nbsp;What may be less familiar is the fact that the most famous form of sandalwood &#8211; from Mysore in India is now very rare and expensive because unsustainable harvesting has decimated the trees. &nbsp;The sandalwood that grows in India is <i>Santalum album<\/i> &#8211; also called East Indian or White Sandalwood.<\/p>\n<p>There are several other species of tree from which a form of sandalwood oil can be extracted, most of which produce oils which are in various ways inferior compared to the best <i>Santalum album<\/i> can produce. &nbsp;This is obviously bad news for perfume and perfumery. &nbsp;There is some good news though in the form of what is sometimes called Australian Sandalwood, from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santalum_spicatum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santalum spicatum<\/a><\/i> &#8211; not as good as Mysore &#8211; but cheaper and more sustainably produced. &nbsp;What I\u2019ve chosen to use though is from <i>Santalum austrocaledonicum<\/i>: the product produced in Vanuatu which is both very good and completely sustainable, if perhaps still not quite as good as the best Mysore, it is probably better than most <i>Santalum album<\/i> oil now on the market.<\/p>\n<p>For those who may not know <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanuatu\">Vanuatu<\/a> is a small country in the South Pacific, recognised by the UN as an independent nation in 1980 when the joint administration of Britain and France came to an end. &nbsp;Among a few other major commercial interests they have a government controlled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandalwood.vu\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Sandalwood industry<\/a> based on sustainable farming practices, mainly growing (and at the moment only producing) oil from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santalum_austrocaledonicum\">Santalum austrocaledonicum<\/a><\/i>. &nbsp;It\u2019s very good stuff &#8211; if you get it from a good source it\u2019s high in the <i>alpha<\/i> and <i>beta<\/i> <i>santalols<\/i> that are essential for that distinctive sandalwood scent and for those who worry about these things free from the moral difficulty of using a product derived from an endangered species and produced in unsustainable ways. &nbsp;There are projects underway to begin production of oil from <i>Santalum album<\/i>&nbsp;in Vanuatu too but that is still some way off as the trees don\u2019t reach oil producing age for about 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Vanuatu is the source of the sandalwood oil used in many of my fragrances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sandalwood I use in many of my products comes from Vanuatu.
