A golfing veteran, Basil started caddying at 16 years of<br \/>\nage and was on the course the day war was declared. He didn\u2019t hesitate to join<br \/>\nAir Raid Precautions (ARP) as a messenger boy and remembers being on Langley<br \/>\nHill the day bombs were dropped.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 15.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;\">\n<span style=\"color: #1d1d1d; line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">\u201c<i>I heard aircraft flying overhead and noticed a half circle of<br \/>\nlight. Suddenly it sounded like an express train coming though the air. I<br \/>\nrealised immediately what was happening and dived into a ditch by the side of<br \/>\nthe road. My family were frightened to death. Bombs went right up Langley Hill.<br \/>\nWe were lucky not to have had more casualties.<\/i>\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 15.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;\">\n<span style=\"color: #1d1d1d; line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">At 18, Basil resigned his apprenticeship as a metal turner and joined<br \/>\nthe Home Guard, and then later the Royal Air Force. Training at various bases<br \/>\nin the UK, he passed out with top grades to become a Leading Aircraftsman. Basil talked about one particularly<br \/>\ndifficult night raid.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 15.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;\">\n<span style=\"color: #1d1d1d; line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">\u201c<i>We\u2019d reached our target in Germany but the rest of the force<br \/>\nhad gone, so we were alone. As soon as we dropped the bombs, the rear gunner<br \/>\nspotted a fighter coming in. He gave the instruction to corkscrew but the<br \/>\nskipper knew that to lose the search lights he\u2019d have to do something entirely<br \/>\ndifferent. He stood the plane on its nose and we dived 5,000 feet. I was pinned<br \/>\nto the cabin ceiling. When we pulled up, I was forced to the floor. Then we<br \/>\ndived another 3,000 feet. Basil\u2019s brother-in-law, Dennis Bartlett, had his 90<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\nbirthday party there and three Bartlett<br \/>\ncousins jointly celebrated their 40<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversaries there too.
