{"id":96,"date":"2012-04-28T16:38:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-28T15:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pellwallhelp.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/28\/styrax-storax\/"},"modified":"2012-04-28T16:38:00","modified_gmt":"2012-04-28T15:38:00","slug":"styrax-storax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pellwallhelp.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/28\/styrax-storax\/","title":{"rendered":"Styrax \/ Storax"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\">Perfumery ingredients often have fascinating names, sometimes confused by different usages and this is a case in point, in this case there are three different ingredients, all fixative base notes, that are easily confused:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Benzoin<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">, used alone, or prefixed with <b>Sumatra<\/b>, usually refers to<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodscentscompany.com\/data\/rs1029211.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Styrax benzoin<\/a><\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&nbsp;(also called <b>Benzoin resinoid<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: red;\">*<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">),&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">whereas<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Benzoin Siam&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">is usually used to refer to<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodscentscompany.com\/data\/rs1006722.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Styrax tonkinensis<\/a><\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8211; the latter has a sweeter smell that always reminds me of cream liqueur. &nbsp;These two are from tropical trees.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Steffen Arctander has this to say about them (among much else):<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<i><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">The name&nbsp;<b>Siam<\/b>&nbsp;is attached to this type of benzoin merely because of the fact, that the&nbsp;merchandise is often exported via Siam (Thailand) in transit.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><b>Benzoin Siam<\/b>&nbsp;comes in variable sizes of pebble- like, often tear-shaped pieces, hard and brittle,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">rarely agglutinated. The individual pieces are yellow-orange or yellowish-brown, and a characteristic feature is the almost white or cream-colored fracture. The odor is pleasant, sweet-balsamic with a distinct note of vanillin.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\n<i><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><b>Benzoin Resinoid<\/b>&nbsp;is used very extensively in perfumery, particularly in soap perfumes (see above on discoloration) where its fixative effect is much appreciated. It is generally applicable, but it has a pronounced odor-depressing effect upon the perfumes in which it is incorporated. This effect is closely connected with the fixative effect, and it is enhanced by the rich sweetness and deep balsamic notes from the resinoid.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><b>Benzoin Resinoid<\/b>&nbsp;is occasionally adulterated&nbsp;with Sumatra benzoin extracts, doctored up with&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">vanillin (see above), or it is \u201cstretched\u201d with&nbsp;Acaroid Resinoid, abietic alcohols, methyl abietate,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">benzyl benzoate, copaiba balsam, amyris oil, etc.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">The addition of smaller amounts of diethyl&nbsp;phthalate as a plasticizer is considered normal&nbsp;<span style=\"vertical-align: 1pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: -1pt;\">\u201cfor convenient handling\u201d, and when clearly labelled so.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;\"><b>Storax<\/b>&nbsp;is quite different again (though unhelpfully it is also sometimes called Styrax or Asian Styrax) and comes from a Mediterranean tree the term is rather generic but usually refers to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodscentscompany.com\/data\/ex1034751.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resin derived from&nbsp;<\/a><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodscentscompany.com\/data\/ex1034751.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liquidambar orientalis<\/a>:<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333333;
