Is Linalool banned?

No, linalool is not banned in the EU or EEA, but it is subject to specific labeling requirements. It is classified as one of the 26 fragrance allergens under EU Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. If linalool is present in concentrations exceeding:

  • 0.001% in leave-on products (e.g., creams, lotions), or
  • 0.01% in rinse-off products (e.g., shampoos, soaps),

it must be listed on the product's label.

However, oxidized linalool (linalool hydroperoxides) is prohibited, as it poses a higher risk of causing allergic reactions.

Linalool remains widely used in fragrances for its pleasant floral and citrus-like scent, provided it adheres to the regulatory requirements.
